  • 2014 Cultivate Iowa Launch
    Tue Mar 11, 2014

ELKHART, Iowa – (March 10, 2014) – The Iowa Food Systems Council’s (IFSC) Food Access and Health Work Group hosted food and gardening expert Gary Oppenheimer who shares his knowledge and expertise on how to empower individuals in the fight against hunger in Iowa through food gardening and produce donation. This lecture on March 11 was part of the 2014 Spring into Action with Cultivate Iowa event at the Iowa Arboretum in Madrid.

Hunger and malnutrition are rampant all across the country. Almost 15 percent of households in the nation are food insecure. In Iowa alone, almost 400,000 people are at risk for hunger, and many more are food insecure. According to Cultivate Iowa project coordinator Angie Tagtow, “Low-resource Iowans struggle with putting foods on their plates, and struggle even more with purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables. Increasing the availability of fresh produce to low-resource Iowans boosts their consumption of fruits and vegetables and reduces risks related to diet-related chronic diseases.”
